Our mission is to coordinate and facilitate agricultural promotion and development activities. Through these activities, our goal is to support and promote the buying, selling, and development of Nebraska agricultural products.
The NDA promotes Nebraska's livestock industry at many state, regional, and national events. The list includes: National Western Stock Show, National Cattlemen's Beef Association Annual Convention and Trade Show, Nebraska State Fair, Nebraska Cattlemen's Classic, and many state commodity association conventions, state breed association annual meetings or tours, and other special events. Through these activities, NDA has received many requests for breeding livestock genetics and agricultural products.
The information listed in this brochure was taken from "profile forms" submitted by operation managers/owners who agreed to be listed in this Nebraska Seedstock Beef Cattle Directory. The information compiled in this directory is published solely as a convenience. The listing of any firm in the publication does not constitute an official endorsement by the State of Nebraska, nor does it assign any preference to the exclusion of any others not listed. While every effort has been made to maintain accuracy and completeness, omissions and errors may occur. Readers are urged to notify AP&D of any inaccuracies. If you would like to be included in the next printing of this brochure, please contact AP&D.

The beef industry is the largest single industry in Nebraska, and it is an aggressive, dynamic business. Productive range and cropland supports over 1,940,000 cows in Nebraska. The abundant supply of water and generous feed and grain supplies have supported the expansion of the state's feedlot industry. Nebraska is the No. 3 marketer in fed cattle.
Nebraska's prominence in our nation's cattle industry is due, in part, to the rich natural resources in the state and to the willingness of the producer to adapt to change. The cattle industry is an industry of constant change. Cattle producers are responsive to the demands of consumers around the world. By using more productive genetics, planned crossbreeding systems, better health programs, and computerized record keeping, today's producer can provide both the breeder and the feeder with cattle to meet both industry and consumer demands.
The Ag Promotion and Development Division of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture is also dedicated to assisting individuals interested in Nebraska cattle. Staff can provide information or arrange for visits with producers and beef industry leaders in our state. We invite you to discover the Nebraska advantage of superior breeding stock. We are confident you can find the livestock assistance you need in Nebraska.
The Nebraska Beef Cattle Industry
Is the state's single largest industry and the engine that powers the state's economy.
The
multiplied impact of the $6.5
billion in cattle sales each year is $12.1 billion. Cattle-related employment means income for
businesses up and down main
street in towns and cities across the state. In short, the beef cattle industry has an unmistakable
impact on other economies
in Nebraska.
Nebraska is Unique
The importance of cattle feeding to Nebraska's economy runs deeper than in other
states. Nearly 5 million head are
finished and marketed in Nebraska, a state with a population of 1.7 million residents. Texas
markets a third more cattle than
Nebraska, but it has a population of 20.1 million residents (nearly 12 times larger than
Nebraska). Iowa markets less than
2 million cattle and has 1.1 million more residents than Nebraska. Thus, Nebraska's standard of
living is more dependent on
the cattle feeding industry.
Nebraska has the Top Cow Counties in the Nation
Nebraska has the top three beef cow counties in the U.S., including the nation's No. 1
cow county Cherry County, with
nearly 166,000 cows. Custer County is No. 2 (100,000) and Holt County is No. 3 (99,000). Also,
among the top counties in
the nation is Lincoln County at No. 12 (69,000).
Four Times as many Cattle as People
January 2006 figures illustrate that Nebraska continues to have far more cattle than
people. Cattle outnumber
Nebraskans nearly 4 to 1. Cows number 1.94million, versus Nebraska residents who number
just
1.7 million. The cows and
the 4.7 million head that are annually fed in Nebraska total nearly 6.64 million cattle.
Why so much Beef in Nebraska?
Nebraska has a unique mix of natural resources. Cattle turn grass from 24 million
acres
of rangeland and pasture, more
than one half of Nebraska's land mass, into protein and many other products for humans. The
land grazed by cattle allows
more people to be fed than would otherwise be possible. More than one billion bushels of corn
are produced here each year,
40% of which is fed to livestock in the state. Cattle producing families, who make their living
from the land, have a strong
incentive to protect their animals and the environment.

Agriculture In Nebraska
Nebraska is located in the mid-section of the United States (latitude 40°N-43°N;
longitude 96°W-104°W). Hot summers and cold winters, variability in rainfall
distribution, fluctuating length of growing season, and frequent winds typify Nebraska's
climate and each has affected agricultural production decisions and resource distribution over
the
years. Average "precipitation," during the last decade, ranged from slightly under 30 inches in
the
southeast to slightly over 17 inches in the west. About 75 percent of the precipitation falls as
rain
during April - September, the crop growing season. Average growing season ranges from 170
days
in the southeast to 120 days in the extreme northwest. The southeast is about 1,000 feet
above sea level, while the Panhandle has elevations of 4,000 - 5,400 feet. "Irrigation" is used by
36 percent of farms, covering 7.6 million acres of harvested cropland, pastureland, and other
land,
providing a buffer against drought, a serious recurrent problem for the Great Plains. A careful
selection of adaptable crops, improved varieties, use of no till, minimum till, strip and contour
cropping, stubble mulching, deferred grazing, and other proven practices enable Nebraska
farmers to
cope with climatic uncertainty and supply domestic and international markets with top-quality
products.
Water Resources
Nebraska is a water-rich state. Underneath over half of its 49-million-acre land
surface,
in porous rock beds called
aquifers, is stored about 2 billion acre feet of good quality groundwater, most of which is
readily
accessible. Add to that an
average of 80 to 100 million acre feet of annual precipitation and an annual surface water
inflow
of roughly 2 million acre feet
to obtain a measure of available water. In terms of surface water, approximately 7 to 8 million
acre feet flows on to other
states, making Nebraska a donor of approximately 5 to 6 million acre feet more than flows into
its borders. Groundwater
irrigation began in the 1920's. At the beginning of 1975, nearly 46,000 registered irrigation
wells
and about 5,000 surface
water rights supplied 4 million acres. Currently, 90,534 registered wells and some 8,552
surface
water rights supply water to
over 7.6 million acres of harvested cropland, pastureland, and other land.
Soil Resources
Nebraska soils are a product of interaction of climate and biological organisms on
parent materials as modified by local
topography, drainage, and exposure to weathering. Two types of geologic deposits are parent
materials for the vast majority
of soils in the state. Wind-blown sand is the parent material in the Sandhills grazing region that
occupies much of the north
central part of the state. Elsewhere, most soils have formed in wind-blown silt and clay or
loess.
Topography and subsequent
soil drainage have greatly influenced development of soil properties in local areas.
Land Uses
Nebraska's 45.7 million acres in farms and ranches is divided between cropland and
other land used primarily for
pastures and rangeland to support the state's livestock industry. In 2006, the area planted to
crops
and used for hay totaled
18.7 million acres. Active participation in government acreage reduction programs has reduced
planted acreages in some
years. Comparable area planted estimates for 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 were 18.9, 19.1, 18.8,
and 18.9 million acres,
respectively.
Corn, soybeans, winter wheat, and sorghum are the state's leading crops, utilizing 15.3 million acres of cropland in 2006. Corn and winter wheat are grown essentially statewide, while most soybeans are produced in the eastern one-half of Nebraska. Primary sorghum producing counties lie in the southeastern and south central portions of the state. The specialty crops of dry edible beans and sugarbeets are produced in western irrigated fields. Sandhill pastures of north central Nebraska produce much of the state's wild hay production and maintain many cow/calf operations.

Nothing Beats Lean Beef
The Skinny on Beef
Today's beef has 27% less fat than 10 years ago. In fact, there are eight cuts of beef
within the federal guidelines to be
designated as "lean." Most lean cuts have the word loin or round in the name (e.g., beef sirloin,
or beef top round steak)
these cuts have on average 6.4 grams of total fat, and 2.3 grams of saturated fat per three-ounce
serving. These are the best
cuts to help you carry on a heart-healthy diet.

Thirty years. Selling bulls at private treaty. Three-hundred fifty mother cows. Also selling
groups
of heifers and bred heifers
privately. We strive to produce moderately framed, easy fleshing cattle that have good carcass
traits. Also easy calving is a
must as our cows calve on their own in big pastures. Our cows must raise big calves on
minimum
inputs. We sell and lease
200+ bulls annually, between the breeds of Angus, Simmental and a few Charolais. Bulls
available year round.

Simply put, premises registration is contact information for livestock owners and you should register to help protect your livestock.
The information collected for registering your premises includes the landowners name, address, phone number, what species are held on the land, and where the land is located. This information would be used to contact producers in the event of an emergency in their area. The information is stored in a federal database and is protected by both federal and state laws from being shared with anyone other than animal health officials.
How will this information help protect your livestock? By speeding up the response to emergencies we can reduce the spread of diseases. By reducing the number of people affected by a disease the economic impact of that disease is also reduced. When you consider that on farm receipts in Nebraska exceed $11 billion and that 1 in 3 jobs are ag-related, you have to conclude that we have an industry worth protecting.
Registering your premises is free, takes only a couple of minutes to complete, and does not obligate you to tag your animals. You can register by phone at 800-572-2437 or on-line at www.locatein48.com.
You'll be glad you did.
If you have questions or would like to speak with a representative from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture about premises identification, please contact:
What is Biosecurity?
Keeping our livestock industry healthy and free from exposure to infectious diseases is a serious full time job. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), through the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), cooperates with other countries around the world and is on alert to prevent foreign animal diseases from crossing our borders. These veterinary officials also work closely with each state veterinarian to maintain a constant animal health vigilance to identify, control, and eradicate specific diseases in the U.S. and monitor animal movement. Local practicing veterinarians and extension specialists are a primary resource in disease surveillance and reporting. They also work with and provide information directly to livestock producers related to the prevention and control of livestock diseases.
The goal of a biosecurity plan is to reduce the risk of disease exposure and transmission. Disease occurs when animals are exposed to an infection and the environmental conditions and animal's resistance are at a certain level. We can influence the occurrence of disease by developing critical control points or changing risk factors between these points. For example, we can limit the exposure to disease through animal movement, maintain a healthy environment by providing proper nutrition and shelter, and finally increase animal resistance by immunizing against certain diseases.
Certain management practices in cow/calf production increase the risk of spreading infectious diseases. Animals that are pastured with other herds, or along fence lines permit direct contact between animals.
Also, movement of livestock within and between states has greatly increased over the past few decades with expanded marketing opportunities and modern transportation. Animals are purchased, sold, and hauled to fairs and livestock shows where they are in contact with other animals and returned to their herd of origin with minimal regard for potential disease transmission.
In the past, diseases such as brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis were identified as serious, widespread disease problems that required eradication for public health and production purposes. Non infected herds were rare, but through a national cooperative effort between the government and livestock producers there has been a great reduction in tuberculosis and virtual elimination of brucellosis. These programs dramatically increased awareness of infectious diseases, the cost of disease to our herds and society, and the importance of disease prevention and control.
Responsible herd owners and managers need to be proactive in understanding and managing the risk to livestock from infectious diseases in order to minimize the potential consequences that could result to their individual operations as well as our food supply. It is equally important for veterinarians and livestock specialists to provide information and assistance to cow-calf producers that wish to improve farm and ranch biosecurity programs by managing the areas of risk that permit entry of disease into a herd.
The following guidelines should assist in developing your biosecuity program:
Require these additional precautions:
For at least five days before you travel to the United States, do not travel near farms, sale barns, zoos, fairs, or other sites where livestock are kept.
Bathe and shower prior to travel. Wear clean clothes which have not been near livestock, wildlife, or other animals.
Make a Customs declaration if you are carrying food products.
Avoid livestock and wildlife at least five days after arriving in the United States.
All states and the United States Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services are on heightened alert to investigate possible cases of FMD. Livestock owners, hunters, and veterinarians are urged to report signs of excessive drooling, lameness, or blistering on their animals.
In Nebraska, the USDA's Veterinary Services office can be contacted at 402-434-2300.
