The Nebraska Advantage . . . BEEF
The beef industry is the largest single industry in Nebraska, and it is an aggressive, dynamic business. Productive range and cropland supports over 1,940,000 cows in Nebraska. The abundant supply of water and generous feed and grain supplies have supported the expansion of the state's feedlot industry. Nebraska is the No. 2 marketer in fed cattle.

Nebraska's prominence in our nation's cattle industry is due, in part, to the rich natural resources in the state and to the willingness of the producer to adapt to change. The cattle industry is an industry of constant change. Cattle producers are responsive to the demands of consumers around the world. By using more productive genetics, planned crossbreeding systems, better health programs, and computerized record keeping, today's producer can provide both the breeder and the feeder with cattle to meet both industry and consumer demands.

The Ag Promotion and Development Division of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture are also dedicated to assisting individuals interested in Nebraska cattle. Staff can provide information or arrange for visits with producers and beef industry leaders in our state. We invite you to discover the Nebraska advantage of superior breeding stock. We are confident you can find the livestock assistance you need in Nebraska.

The Nebraska Beef Cattle Industry
Is the state's single largest industry and the engine that powers the state's economy. The multiplied impact of the $6.5 billion in cattle sales each year is $12.1 billion. Cattle-related employment means income for businesses up and down main street in towns and cities across the state. In short, the beef cattle industry has an unmistakable impact on other economies in Nebraska.

Nebraska is Unique
The importance of cattle feeding to Nebraska's economy runs deeper than in other states. Nearly 5 million head are finished and marketed in Nebraska, a state with a population of 1.7 million residents. Texas markets a third more cattle than Nebraska, but it has a population of 20.1 million residents (nearly 12 times larger than Nebraska). Iowa markets less than 2 million cattle and has 1.1 million more residents than Nebraska. Thus, Nebraska's standard of living is more dependent on the cattle feeding industry.

Nebraska has the Top Cow Counties in the Nation
Nebraska has the top three beef cow counties in the U.S., including the nation's No. 1 cow county Cherry County, with nearly 166,000 cows. Custer County is No. 2 (100,000) and Holt County is No. 3 (99,000). Also, among the top counties in the nation is Lincoln County at No. 12 (69,000).

Four Times as many Cattle as People
January 2006 figures illustrate that Nebraska continues to have far more cattle than people. Cattle outnumber Nebraskans nearly 4 to 1. Cows number 1.94 million, versus Nebraska residents who number just 1.7 million. The cows and the 4.7 million head that are annually fed in Nebraska total nearly 6.64 million cattle.

Why so much Beef in Nebraska?
Nebraska has a unique mix of natural resources. Cattle turn grass from 24 million acres of rangeland and pasture, more than one half of Nebraska's land mass, into protein and many other products for humans. The land grazed by cattle allows more people to be fed than would otherwise be possible. More than one billion bushels of corn are produced here each year, 40% of which is fed to livestock in the state. Cattle producing families, who make their living from the land, have a strong incentive to protect their animals and the environment.

Agriculture In Nebraska
Nebraska is located in the mid-section of the United States (latitude 40°N-43°N; longitude 96°W-104°W). Hot summers and cold winters, variability in rainfall distribution, fluctuating length of growing season, and frequent winds typify Nebraska's climate and each has affected agricultural production decisions and resource distribution over the years. Average "precipitation," during the last decade, ranged from slightly under 30 inches in the southeast to slightly over 17 inches in the west. About 75 percent of the precipitation falls as rain during April - September, the crop growing season. Average growing season ranges from 170 days in the southeast to 120 days in the extreme northwest. The southeast is about 1,000 feet above sea level, while the Panhandle has elevations of 4,000 - 5,400 feet. "Irrigation" is used by 36 percent of farms, covering 7.6 million acres of harvested cropland, pastureland, and other land, providing a buffer against drought, a serious recurrent problem for the Great Plains. A careful selection of adaptable crops, improved varieties, use of no till, minimum till, strip and contour cropping, stubble mulching, deferred grazing, and other proven practices enable Nebraska farmers to cope with climatic uncertainty and supply domestic and international markets with top-quality products.

Water Resources
Nebraska is a water-rich state. Underneath over half of its 49-million-acre land surface, in porous rock beds called aquifers, is stored about 2 billion acre feet of good quality groundwater, most of which is readily accessible. Add to that an average of 80 to 100 million acre feet of annual precipitation and an annual surface water inflow of roughly 2 million acre feet to obtain a measure of available water. In terms of surface water, approximately 7 to 8 million acre feet flows on to other states, making Nebraska a donor of approximately 5 to 6 million acre feet more than flows into its borders. Groundwater irrigation began in the 1920's. At the beginning of 1975, nearly 46,000 registered irrigation wells and about 5,000 surface water rights supplied 4 million acres. Currently, 90,534 registered wells and some 8,552 surface water rights supply water to over 7.6 million acres of harvested cropland, pastureland, and other land.

Soil Resources
Nebraska soils are a product of interaction of climate and biological organisms on parent materials as modified by local topography, drainage, and exposure to weathering. Two types of geologic deposits are parent materials for the vast majority of soils in the state. Wind-blown sand is the parent material in the Sandhills grazing region that occupies much of the north central part of the state. Elsewhere, most soils have formed in wind-blown silt and clay or loess. Topography and subsequent soil drainage have greatly influenced development of soil properties in local areas.

Land Uses
Nebraska's 45.7 million acres in farms and ranches is divided between cropland and other land used primarily for pastures and rangeland to support the state's livestock industry. In 2006, the area planted to crops and used for hay totaled 18.7 million acres. Active participation in government acreage reduction programs has reduced planted acreages in some years. Comparable area planted estimates for 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 were 18.9, 19.1, 18.8, and 18.9 million acres, respectively.

Corn, soybeans, winter wheat, and sorghum are the state's leading crops, utilizing 15.3 million acres of cropland in 2006. Corn and winter wheat are grown essentially statewide, while most soybeans are produced in the eastern one-half of Nebraska. Primary sorghum producing counties lie in the southeastern and south central portions of the state. The specialty crops of dry edible beans and sugarbeets are produced in western irrigated fields. Sandhill pastures of north central Nebraska produce much of the state's wild hay production and maintain many cow/calf operations.

Nothing Beats Lean Beef

The Skinny on Beef
Today's beef has 27% less fat than 10 years ago. In fact, there are 29 cuts of beef within the federal guidelines to be designated as "lean." Most lean cuts have the word loin or round in the name (e.g., beef sirloin, or beef top round steak) these cuts have on average 6.4 grams of total fat, and 2.3 grams of saturated fat per three-ounce serving. These are the best cuts to help you carry on a heart-healthy diet.

Definitions of Value Added Programs:

Source and Age Data
Feedyard is actively maintaining Source and Age Data for traceability and record keeping. Does not indicate that the feedyard is verified for Source and Age Data and audited by a third-party; however, feedyard is maintaining Source and Age Data for domestic marketability such as branded beef programs.

QSA - Quality System Assessment
This USDA QSA program provides suppliers the opportunity to specify product requirements and a documented quality management system. The focus of this program is primarily source and age verification and therefore allows cattle in an approved QSA program to be eligible for export. QSA program requires third party auditing twice a year.

PVP Process Verified Program
This USDA program provides suppliers with the opportunity to be able to make marketing claims associated with their process verified points these include age, source, feeding practices, or other raising and processing claims and market themselves as "USDA Process Verified". Programs approved for PVP are also approved to use the "USDA Process Verified Shield." Cattle in a PVP program are eligible for export or additional marketing options. PVP requires third party auditing once per year.

NHTC - The Non-Hormone Treated Cattle Program
The Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC), USDA program has been in effect since 1989, when the European Union (EU) and the U.S. agreed to control measures to facilitate the trade of non-hormone treated bovine meat.

There are three principal components of the NHTC program:

  1. Cattle are to be grown in approved farms/feedlots and delivered to the slaughter establishment with shipping documentation that includes the statement "Cattle Meet EV Program Requirements for the EU" and clearly identifies the animals and the quantity.
  2. Non-Hormone treated cattle and beef are segregated at the slaughter establishment and handled in a fashion that ensures that they are not commingled with other animals or meat.
  3. Tissue samples from non-hormone treated cattle are collected at slaughter and analyzed in order for FSIS to provide export certification for this product.
Natural Feed Management Program
USDA currently defines "natural" as a product containing no artificial ingredient or added color and is only minimally processed (a process which does not fundamentally alter the raw product). The label must explain the use of the term natural (such as - no added colorings or artificial ingredients; minimally processed.) Therefore, cattle fed in a natural management feed program will be done so to meet this USDA definition or other program or product claims. Examples might be never-ever use of antibiotics, no growth hormones or no artificial ingredients, or livestock consuming only an all-natural diet.

Non-Hormone (beef)
The term "no hormones administered" may be approved for use on the label of beef products if sufficient documentation is provided to the Agency by the producer showing no hormones have been used in raising the animals.

NO ANTIBIOTICS (red meat)
The terms "no antibiotics added" may be used on labels for meat products if sufficient documentation is provided by the producer to the Agency demonstrating that the animals were raised without antibiotics.

What is Premises Registration and Why Should You Register?

Simply put, premises registration is contact information for livestock owners and you should register to help protect your livestock.

The information collected for registering your premises includes the landowner's name, address, phone number, what species are held on the land, and where the land is located. This information would be used to contact producers in the event of an emergency in their area. The information is stored in a federal database and is protected by both federal and state laws from being shared with anyone other than animal health officials.

How will this information help protect your livestock? By speeding up the response to emergencies we can reduce the spread of diseases. By reducing the number of people affected by a disease, the economic impact of that disease is also reduced. When you consider that on farm receipts in Nebraska exceed $11 billion and that 1 in 3 jobs are ag related, you have to conclude that we have an industry worth protecting.

Registering your premises is free, takes only a couple of minutes to complete, and does not obligate you to tag your animals. You can register by phone at 800-572-2437 or on-line at www.locatein48.com.

You'll be glad you did.

LIVESTOCK BIOSECURITY

What is Biosecurity?

Keeping our livestock industry healthy and free from exposure to infectious diseases is a serious full time job. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), through the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), cooperates with other countries around the world and is on alert to prevent foreign animal diseases from crossing our borders. These veterinary officials also work closely with each state veterinarian to maintain a constant animal health vigilance to identify, control, and eradicate specific diseases in the U.S. and monitor animal movement. Local practicing veterinarians and extension specialists are a primary resource in disease surveillance and reporting. They also work with and provide information directly to livestock producers related to the prevention and control of livestock diseases.

The goal of a biosecurity plan is to reduce the risk of disease exposure and transmission. Disease occurs when animals are exposed to an infection and the environmental conditions and animal's resistance are at a certain level. We can influence the occurrence of disease by developing critical control points or changing risk factors between these points. For example, we can limit the exposure to disease through animal movement, maintain a healthy environment by providing proper nutrition and shelter, and finally increase animal resistance by immunizing against certain diseases.

Feedlot Guide to Biosecurity and Security

Where to Start

A few phrases apply well to biosecurity and security efforts: "build on what you know," "there are no most valuable players" and "figure out what can go wrong figure out how to prevent it from going wrong figure out how to monitor your efforts."

The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) production safety system has great potential in biosecurity and security concerns of livestock operations. A central objective in the HACCP system is to prevent, eliminate, control, or reduce a safety concern to an acceptable level. In livestock biosecurity and security programs, the prevention, elimination, control or reduction applies to disease transmission. Standard Operating Procedures Good Management Practices, communication, and training checklists can be tools used to help accomplish the biosecurity and security objectives. It is very important to involve all personnel in developing, monitoring, and evaluating the biosecurity and security needs and activities of an operation. Open discussions that respectfully debate the merits of an activity between personnel levels is more apt to recruit personnel cooperation and the justification discussions during the scheduled biosecurity and security reviews.

Biosecurity management and practices on feedyards are designed to prevent the spread of disease by minimizing the movement of biologic organisms (viruses, bacteria, rodents, etc.) onto and within an operation. Biosecurity can be very difficult to maintain because the interrelationships between animals, management, and biologic organisms are very complex. While developing and maintaining biosecurity is difficult, it is the cheapest, most effective means of disease control available and no disease prevention program will work without it. Improving an animal's disease resistance is at the heart of disease prevention and/or herd health programs and must be considered in the "standard operating procedures" (SOP)/"good management practices" (GMP) of all livestock production management.

The biosecurity GMP's outlined are generic and may not match the needs of all feedlot operations. It will be important to evaluate the specific biosecurity needs of each production location and make adjustments in the generic checklists included.

Welcoming International Visitors to Your Feedlot

Require these additional precautions:

International Travelers: Before Traveling to the United States

For at least five days before you travel to the United States, do not travel near farms, sale barns, zoos, fairs, or other sites where livestock are kept.

Why? Animals affected by, or even exposed to, Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) can expel the virus as they exhale, and by being in close proximity, you could breathe it in. Although it is not a danger to you, the virus can live in your throat or nasal passages for a time.
Bathe and shower prior to travel. Wear clean clothes which have not been near livestock, wildlife, or other animals.
Why? Live, airborne FMD virus can contaminate skin, clothing, and hair. Bathing and wearing fresh clothing prior to travel lessens the risk of carrying the virus.
Disinfect before you travel to the U.S.! Tuck a bottle of vinegar and a small cloth in your luggage to wipe down glasses, jewelry, watches, belts, hats, cellular phones, hearing aids, camera bags, backpacks, and purses before traveling.
Why? Vinegar, used full strength, is an effective, but inexpensive, disinfectant. Wipe down all items which may have been exposed to airborne FMD virus.
Scrape away all mud, debris, or soil from shoes. Disinfect all shoe surfaces with vinegar.
Why? The FMD virus can live in the soil, organic material, and mud for an extended period of time. Clean shoes reduce risk.
If possible, wash or dry clean all clothing, including jackets, before traveling to the United States, especially if you live on a ranch! If this is not practical, clean your clothing as soon as possible when you return home. Do not re-wear clothing before they are washed or cleaned!
Why? Live FMD virus can contaminate clothing. Do not risk exposing United States livestock or wildlife to disease by wearing clothes which have not been washed or cleaned. Remember to clean jackets, gloves, and scarves!
Do not carry food or other prohibited items to the United States.
Why? Aside from being illegal, meat, unpasteurized cheese, and unprocessed hides or animal products can harbor live FMD virus.
Upon Arrival in the United States

Make a Customs declaration if you are carrying food products.

Why? By declaring food products, Customs or United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials can properly dispose of them. Failure to declare items can result in excessive fines.
If you have visited a farm or ranch on your trip or if you have been on a ranch, visited a zoo, wildlife park, or other site housing animals, make a declaration. It takes only a few moments to have the port officials spray your boots to protect against disease.

When You Get Home . . .

Avoid livestock and wildlife at least five days after arriving in the United States.

Why? It takes time for airborne FMD virus to be cleared from your throat and nasal passages. Do not take chances!
If you didn't wash or dry clean clothing before traveling to the United States, do it immediately upon returning home.
Why? Airborne FMD virus could have contaminated your clothing.
If you live or work on a ranch, wash or dry clean clothing BEFORE you get home!
Why? Do not risk carrying the virus to your stock!

On Alert in the United States

All states and the United States Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services are on heightened alert to investigate possible cases of FMD. Livestock owners, hunters, and veterinarians are urged to report signs of excessive drooling, lameness, or blistering on their animals.

In Nebraska, the USDA's Veterinary Services office can be contacted at 402-434-2300.

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Industry, can be reached at 402-471- 2351.
