Emerald Ash Borer Survey
As part of a national survey NDA set 68 traps, in 9 counties, at high risk areas, such as state parks and rest stops. All traps were negative. NDA also continues to inspect nursery stock during Nursery Dealer and Nursery Grower inspections, for insect and disease problems, including EAB. Particular attention is given to ash stock, to ensure that EAB is not entering the state. NDA Inspectors also check for labeling of place of origin on nursery stock, as required by the Nebraska Plant Protection and Plant Pest Act, to ensure that all federal and state quarantines are being followed. The NDA is working to educate the nursery industry about this potential threat to ash trees in Nebraska, through outreach programs. The NDA has developed EAB outreach materials, which continue to be distributed at various industry meetings and conferences.NDA also participated in the National 2011 Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week, May 22-28. We received a Governor’s Proclamation recognizing the importance of EAB Awareness in the state, and the threat that EAB would pose to Nebraska, should it be found here. We worked with the NE Emerald Ash Borer Working Group to put up yard signs and outreach trees at high visibility areas across the state. These included campgrounds, rest stops, state, county and federal offices, and state and national parks. Outreach materials were distributed to Master Gardeners, FFA students, Arboretums and a variety of other groups. NDA ran a radio spot to promote EAB Awareness. This is the third year that Nebraska has participated in the National EAB Awareness Week Campaign.
