From cattle and sheep to pork burgers and milk, the students of St. Teresa Elementary School enjoyed a day on the farm with farm animals, farm equipment, and great farm food. They learned that pigs were not pink after all and shearing a sheep was like giving it a haircut or a shave.
These lucky students benefited from the knowledge and expertise of the Nebraska Agricultural Youth Council (NAYC), who served as tour guides to the fourth and fifth graders. The annual Farm Tour gives the ten Council members a chance to share their love for agriculture with students who primarily live in urban areas and may not have many opportunities to be on farms. Several farmers near Wahoo also donate their time and farms for the day, allowing the students to visit a variety of places, including dairy, beef, swine, sheep, and grain farms.
As one of the most unusual field trips taken by these elementary students, they spend the day in fresh air, under the sun, and playing with animals. The Council members enjoy questions posed by these young, inquisitive minds, and the elementary students have fun with their young adult tour guides. All participants regard the activity as one of their favorites throughout the year.
