The soft touch of a lamb's wool, the piercing whine of a baby pig and the contentment of a dairy cow chewing her cud.....
Kids often read about such farm animal characteristics, but it's not everyday they get to fill the shoes of a Nebraska farmer and actually experience what life on the farm is really like.
Approximately 70 elementary students from Clinton Elementary School in Lincoln will learn all about life on the farm on Thursday, April 8, when they participate in the Nebraska Agriculture Youth Council's (NAYC) annual Urban Youth Farm Tour. Students will visit dairy, beef, swine, sheep, and grain farms near Wahoo.
"This is just a great opportunity for students who may not otherwise get the opportunity to experience farm life and really see where their food comes from," said Kristi Boswell, Ag Youth Coordinator for the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.
The NAYC consists of 14 college-age men and women who have been selected by Nebraska Agriculture Director Merlyn Carlson to promote agriculture to Nebraska youth. Council members are chosen based on their enthusiasm, interest, and leadership in agriculture. For the past 33 years, the Council has promoted agriculture to Nebraska youth from preschoolers to high school students.
