LINCOLN - The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) hosted an "Agricultural Adventure" yesterday. NDA sponsors "Agricultural Adventures" to promote Nebraska's various agricultural products and agricultural activities.
In recognition of the contributions made by Nebraska's dairy industry, Governor Dave Heineman toured Double Dutch Dairy near Shelby. The dairy milks 3,600 cows three times a day, and is considered one of the largest employers in Polk County.
Double Dutch Dairy began operation in Nebraska in 2000 and is owned and operated by Mr. Todd Tuls. The dairy just recently went through an expansion.
Joining the Governor on the tour were representatives of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the University of Nebraska Lincoln, the American Dairy Association/Dairy Council of Nebraska, and the Nebraska Corn Board, along with several Nebraska dairy producers. The dairy producers were able to meet with the Governor after the tour to discuss their ideas and concerns for the future of the dairy industry in Nebraska.
"I was thoroughly impressed with what I saw in Shelby," Governor Heineman said. "Just a few years into setting up and running this operation, the dairy has already been able to expand. I was also very pleased to learn that Double Dutch Dairy's equipment is produced and maintained by a Nebraska company. This operation is another example of the positive impact our agricultural producers have on local communities and our state overall."
