Urban Elementary Students to Experience Life on the Farm

LINCOLN - Urban kids often read about agriculture and farming, but it’s not every day they get to fill the shoes of a Nebraska farmer and actually experience what life on the farm is really like.

Approximately 75 elementary students from Dundee Elementary School, Omaha, will learn about life on the farm on Friday, April 13, when they participate in the Nebraska Agriculture Youth Council’s (NAYC) annual Urban Youth Farm Tour. Students will visit dairy, beef, swine, sheep and grain farms near Wahoo.

“These young students have the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a farmer and see the origins of much of their food while learning about Nebraska’s rich agricultural background,” said Alyssa Smola, Ag Youth Coordinator for the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

The NAYC consists of 12 college-age men and women who have been selected by Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Greg Ibach to promote agriculture to Nebraska youth. Council members are chosen based on their enthusiasm, interest, and leadership in agriculture. For the past 36 years, NAYC has promoted agriculture to Nebraska youth from preschoolers to high school students.

NOTE TO MEDIA: Members of the media are welcome and encouraged to join the tour. Please call Alyssa Smola at (402) 471-6864 for farm locations. On the day of the tour, please call (402) 443-6349.
