Japanese Beetle (Popillia japonica)

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture has been surveying for Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) in Nebraska since 1981. Japanese beetle pheromone traps are placed at likely points of introduction with emphasis on airports, rail yards, sod farms, rest stops, and nurseries. Small numbers of Japanese beetles have been trapped at dealer and grower sites every few years, probably due to infested B & B and container stock coming in.

The US Domestic Japanese Beetle Harmonization Plan was adopted August 19, 1998. The American Nursery and Landscape Association, the National Plant Board, and the USDA worked together to harmonize the Japanese beetle nursery stock certification requirements to minimize pest risk and to facilitate the orderly marketing of nursery stock. In this plan, Nebraska is listed as a Category 2 state. Nursery stock shipments from infested areas into all Nebraska counties require a nursery certificate with a statement that the shipment is in compliance with one of the approved methods in the harmonization plan. The approved methods are detailed in Appendix 2 of the plan.

Only one dealer location (Lincoln, in Lancaster County) is considered established with Japanese beetle. This was detected in 1989 and is currently under eradication. Eradication trapping and insecticide treatments began in 1991 at this dealer location. Past trapping history at this dealer location is as follows:
1999: 8 Japanese beetles
1998: 7 Japanese beetles
1997: 6 Japanese beetles
1996: 10 Japanese beetles
1995: 8 Japanese beetles
1994: 11 Japanese beetles
1993: 23 Japanese beetles
1992: 14 Japanese beetles
1991: 10 Japanese beetles
1990: 25 Japanese beetles
1989: 23 Japanese beetles
Another location considered established with Japanese beetle is the rest area on Interstate 80 and Highway 77 North (near Lincoln, in Lancaster County). Trapping and eradication treatments are occurring at this location. Past trapping history at this rest area is as follows:
1999: 0 Japanese beetles
1998: 0 Japanese beetles
1997: 2 Japanese beetles
1996: 13 Japanese beetles
1995: 133 Japanese beetles
1994: 51 Japanese beetles
1993: 32 Japanese beetles
1992: 28 Japanese beetles
1991: 42 Japanese beetles
1990: 131 Japanese beetles
1989: 551 Japanese beetles
1988: 366 Japanese beetles
1987: 318 Japanese beetles
1986: 112 Japanese beetles
The most probable cause for this rest area becoming infested with Japanese beetle was due to infested B & B nursery stock being planted in the fall of 1984. A portion of the rest stop which is in turfgrass and under irrigation has been treated with insecticides for the past few years. The following shows the trapping history of Japanese beetle statewide in Nebraska:
1999: 659 Japanese beetles
1998: 131 Japanese beetles
1997: 218 Japanese beetles
1996: 173 Japanese beetles
1995: 353 Japanese beetles
1994: 138 Japanese beetles
1993: 87 Japanese beetles
1992: 54 Japanese beetles
1991: 61 Japanese beetles
1990: 163 Japanese beetles
1989: 608 Japanese beetles
1988: 381 Japanese beetles
1987: 318 Japanese beetles
1986: 112 Japanese beetles
